About Cursillo

Cursillo (cur See yo) is a Lay Catholic movement. It's about friends helping friends grow in Christ and shared Christian values in our challenging world. Cursillo began in Spain, on the island of Mallorca, in the 1940's and has spread to countries throughout the world.  The Cursillo charism is rooted in an understanding that God, in Christ, loves us deeply just as we are. Through the Cursillo Movement we encounter Christ in the lives we live every day, and, especially, through friendship and community.

Involvement

How do you get involved with the Cursillo community? It’s pretty easy, actually; we welcome all Catholics interested in a closer walk with God.

For many, involvement with Cursillo begins with a three-day retreat called the Weekend to examine and celebrate yourself, your relationship with Christ, and your relationship with the Christian community.

If you’re interested in participating in a Weekend, contact us.

Other people begin their Cursillo involvement by:

  • attending a parish or diocesan Ultreya

  • going to a group reunion (much like a prayer group)

  • attending a Cursillo School of Leaders discussion or other event

There is no one right way to get involved, just the way that is right for you.

Weekends

What happens on a Weekend? We begin with a silent retreat Thursday night through Friday morning. For the rest of the Weekend, you’ll hear short talks on a variety of topics from faith perspectives of team members just like you. The Weekend also offers time for meditation and reconciliation as well as community meals (the food is great, prepared and served with loving hands). Two spiritual directors, at least one of them a priest, will be present as team members throughout the weekend. And there’s a lot of music and singing–if you have an instrument, bring it along!

Men and women have separate retreats because the way we communicate is different. This is a safe but challenging weekend. We strive to provide an environment that helps you to grow in Christ’s Love.

As the National Cursillo Center Website puts it:

The Cursillo Movement consists of proclaiming the best news of the best reality: that God, in Christ, loves us. Communicated by the best means, which is friendship towards the best of each one, which is his being person and his capacity of Conviction, Decision, and Constancy.

Fourth Day

A Cursillo Weekend is three days, the rest of a Cursillista's life is the Fourth Day.  The purpose of the Fourth Day is the continuous conversion of the individual and therefore the transformation of that person's family, friends, community, and place of work.  Cursillistas are called to bring Christ with them wherever they go. The Cursillo Movement offers several methods to encourage community and connection with Christ - Group Reunion, Ultreya, and School of Leaders.
