  • February 9, 7:30 p.m., St. John the Beloved, 6420 Linway Terrace, McLean. Kyle
Duncan, who is Senior Legal Counsel for the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty and a St. John parishioner, is giving a talk in the Parish Hall on the recent HHS ruling that will require religious organizations to provide insurance coverage for abortions, sterilization and contraception. Freddie Wall says: “The Becket Fund is leading the fight against this ruling.  This is a great opportunity to hear firsthand what this ruling means for us and how we can fight back.  Please come, and bring a friend!”

March 14, 6-8 p.m., St. Charles Borromeo, 3304 N. Washington Blvd., Arlington. Lenten Empty Bowls for SOME (So Others Might Eat) is an opportunity to raise awareness about the growing issue of hunger in Washington area and to provide meals for the  hungry and homeless. Guests are invited to help provide food for hungry men, women and children, by attending a simple soup supper where they may choose and take home a beautiful hand-crafted bowl that will serve as a reminder of those whose bowls are empty. All proceeds will help SOME continue to provide more than 1,000 meals each day to hungry and homeless District residents. At SOME, contact Father John Adams.

  • Mary Lou McGonigle writes: “In July, two of my group reunion sisters and I will be going out to Priestfield in W.VA. for one week to be counselors at SOME Summer Camp for Seniors. This is the seventeenth summer that I am looking forward to being with the joyful Senior Citizen Campers from DC, Md or Va. Camp is, by far, my favorite volunteer activity.  My main job is just to have fun with the campers… and that is easy. Come join us as a “counselor” to serve our brothers and sisters who otherwise wouldn’t have a vacation. You will enjoy it. If you’d like to volunteer for one of the weeks–July 15-20 or July 22-27–contact Sister Mary Ellen (gro.emosnull@drofem or 202-797-8806 x 1018).”
  • Trudy Dervan and Freddie Wall recommend an ongoing Institute of Catholic Culture lecture series throughout our diocese. Topics include “Ethics: Understanding the Fundamentals of Catholic Morality” and “The Martyrdom of St. James and the Making of Catholic Spain.”
