Message from Phil #4 04/25/12

My dear brothers and sisters:

De Colores! Welcome to the newest members of our community-the men of the 124th Men’s Cursillo-Greg Cleva, Robert (a.k.a. Raphael), Davis, Fred Day, Father  Matthew DeForest, John Dogan, Matthew Kranz, Tony Lacot, David Scully, and Jeffrey Wolfhope. The Holy Spirit poured down as surely as last weekend’s rain, and their Sunday night witnesses touched all of us. Please know that all of us in the Arlington Cursillo community stand ready to help you in any way we can to enrich your Fourth Day journey in piety, study, and action. Thanks once again to the team, sponsors, cook crew, and all who supported the Weekend.

Perhaps in the aftermath of your Lenten reflection, you’ve found you have more time for
ministry… or would like to try a different ministry. If that’s the case, I hope you’ll join us this Saturday at the School of Leaders/Diocesan Ultreya event at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna. Get plugged in and serve our movement! And just a word about School of Leaders: don’t let the name scare you away. Remember, you learned on the weekend that all of you are leaders – leaders in changing environments, leaders in example, leaders in making a difference. Every School of Leaders event is intended to help you in that role. The men of the 124th and the women of the 134th Weekends are especially welcome.

Also, consider starting your Memorial Day weekend with our May 25 Evening of Reflection at Missionhurst. It will be a great way to reflect about your spiritual journey and to find ways to enrich it this summer, whether you’re spending time at the beach, in the mountains, or at home.

Memorial Day weekend also will mark the Dominican Retreat House Weekend for the Seriously Ill. Please consider offering food or prayer palanca for the team and attendees… and invite family members or friends who are in need of this special retreat to contact the retreat house. There is no fee, and the team includes medical and spiritual leaders.

Also, last Friday, Father Tuck and I spoke on Capitol Hill. The topic was “How to Have
Your Faith Catch Fire and Change Your Life.” We had an excellent turnout-about sixty people-and many of them are interested in exploring further the Cursillo principles of piety, study, and action. If you have a Catholic group that would be interested in such a dialogue, please let me know.

Finally, thanks to those who have agreed to serve on the Cursillo Steering Committee, a temporary gathering of Cursillistas who will brainstorm on ways to prioritize and implement the vision statement I shared. We’ll be getting back to you all shortly on the fruits of that service.

In God’s love,

Phil

You Can Help!

Looking for a way to give back to Cursillo? Come to the School of Leaders on April 28, 9:30 a.m.-noon, at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna. Learn more about the Cursillo Secretariat’s seven ministries, and where we could use your help. And, it’s a great opportunity to meet the new Cursillistas from the Women’s 134th Weekend and the Men’s 124th Weekend. We’ll be in the OLGC school’s counsel room. If you can’t make the meeting but want to get involved, check out the Secretariat committee pages. More money than time? Consider a financial donation so we can keep the attendee cost of the Weekend down.

Message from Phil #3 03/27/12

My dear brothers and sisters:

De Colores! What a privilege it was to hear the sharing of our new Cursillistas on Sunday night at the 134th Women’s Cursillo Closing (see the pictures here). Welcome to the community to Teri Baker, Laura Bandni, Katie Beckman, Susan Cavanaugh, Monty Cones, Deidra Crone, Mary Sue Englund, Peggy Fargo, Melissa Grossman, Sr. Rejoice Mary Hoedoafia, Joan Leary, Cathy Lemley, Jean Lupinacci, Lorraine Moore, Liz Murphy, Margaret Plunkett, Carol Seely, Joanne Summer, Theresa Vogel, Peggy Wickham, and Anne Suter Zimmer. We all stand ready to help you in any way we can to enrich your Fourth Day journey in piety, study, and action. Thanks once again to the team, sponsors, cook crew, and all who supported the Weekend.

Everyone, especially the new Cursillistas, is invited to attend the next School of Leaders event on April 28 at Our Lady of Good Counsel in Vienna. Get plugged in and serve our movement! Details here:  http://www.arlingtoncursillo.org/events-calendar/?event_id=374   And just a word about School of Leaders: This is not about being a leader in Cursillo. You are all leaders in your own ministries and I encourage you to attend any SoL event that you can.

As I noted at Closing, we have a serious challenge ahead. The 124th Men’s Weekend April 19-22 at Missionhurst is significantly undersubscribed. It would be a tragedy if we had to cancel the Weekend. Everyone needs to think about asking one person to make this Weekend. I call on you to reach out this week to family members, friends, fellow parishioners, neighbors, and work colleagues to invite them to say yes to the Weekend. It’s easy to get an application; if your parish needs free brochures for racks or distribution, that’s easy too. If you’re reading this message, you know how Cursillo—on the Weekend, in group reunion, at Ultreya, and at School  of Leaders—can change a life. Won’t you give someone else that same opportunity? Please remember that while there typically is a donation for the Weekend, if it is someone’s time, we will make sure that person can attend no matter what his or her financial situation.

I also want to call your attention to our Secretariat committees. All committees are working on new strategies and offerings as a result of the vision statement I have shared with all of you. All committees are open to new members. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been a Cursillista for one day or forty years. Prayerfully consider whether you can spare a few hours a month to help.

In God’s love,

Phil

“Trust in God…

The Lord is my light and my salvation.” Those beautiful words from Psalm 27 are the 124th Men’s Weekend Team‘s theme.
