- School: Compassion for the Poor
Consider that we are, each of us, poor in spirit, totally dependent on God. The anawim (Hebrew for “the poor who are bent over”) teach us to depend on God alone — not the ego’s pursuits — as the source of a life lived with meaning. Jesus’ mission is to bring good news to the poor (Lk 4: 17-19) and we, the body of Christ, are called to share in that mission. Jesus tells us to see Jesus in the poor and be Jesus to the poor. Jesus says that we have found the kingdom when we see his face in the poor (Matt 25:31-46). We’ll be discussing why this is God’s truth.
The Northern Virginia School of Leaders’ current theme is “The Fruit of God’s Spirit in Our Fourth Day.” We’re looking at the signs (or evidence) of God’s spirit in our lives! This month’s fruit is “Compassion for the Poor” (Matt 25:31-46).
